Which is Better, Brain Games or Getting Fit?

As seniors, what should we do to boost our brainpower? Dr. Majid Fotuhi, a neurologist at the Neurology Institute for Brain Health and Fitness and author of The Memory Cure and Boost Your Brain recommends the following:

  • Vigorous physical exercise. Physical fitness is the best thing you can do for your brain’s health.
  • Memory exercises. Try a brain game that requires you to remember names or faces to boost your brain muscles.
  • Meditation and breathing exercises. Spend at least 15 minutes a day relaxing to decrease brain excitement.
  • Ingest more omega-3. Supplement your diet with fish oil or include more fish in your diet.

When choosing a brain game or training program, look for one you enjoy, that works your memory, provides plenty of variety to stimulate your brain and is challenging enough to work your mental muscles. Make sure to challenge your brain for 15 to 20 minutes daily.
